Celtic managed to stay in contention for their Champions League tie against Bayern Munich after a narrow 2-1 loss in Wednesday’s first leg. Brendan Rodgers’ side did the bare minimum to keep their hopes alive, with Daizen Maeda’s crucial goal ensuring they remain in the fight for next week’s return leg at the Allianz Arena.
The Hoops put in a spirited performance, pushing hard for a late equalizer only to be thwarted by Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer on several occasions. While Celtic’s attacking efforts were commendable, their defense faced constant pressure, with Vincent Kompany’s Bayern side keeping them on edge throughout the match.
One moment of criticism fell on Greg Taylor, whose weak tackle allowed Michael Olise to score just before halftime. Many fans pointed fingers at Taylor for his role in the goal, but former defender Mark Wilson came to his defense on Superscoreboard.
Mark Wilson Defends Greg Taylor After Criticism
“I think there’s a lot of bandwagon jumping with Greg Taylor,” Wilson stated. “I heard people at halftime saying, ‘He should have done this for the goal.’ Then you look at social media, and there’s an absolute pile-on.
“Sure, Greg Taylor gave the ball away a few times, but let’s consider who he was up against—the press, the positioning, and the limited options he had, especially when receiving the ball from Trusty on the touchline.
“Maybe it wasn’t his best game in possession, but defensively, what more could he have done for that goal?”
While the spotlight remains on individual performances, criticism has also been directed at Brendan Rodgers’ European record, with some questioning his tactical approach in high-pressure matches.
