Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has faced a challenging managerial journey since departing Ibrox, having been dismissed by Aston Villa before taking a risk in the Saudi Pro League. However, his tenure at Al-Ettifaq was cut short earlier this year as the club found itself battling relegation.
After his departure from Al-Ettifaq, Rangers legend Ally McCoist predicted that Gerrard could return to the club where he famously secured the Premiership title in 2021. McCoist stated, “It wouldn’t surprise me if Steven Gerrard came back to Ibrox.”
“He’s highly regarded by the supporters because of the league title he won, and his next managerial move will be crucial for his career. Things haven’t gone smoothly for him since leaving Rangers—similar to Frank Lampard’s situation at Coventry, where his next role was equally significant,” McCoist remarked.
Meanwhile, Welsh pundit Robbie Savage raised the possibility on BBC’s 606, asking, “Rangers fans, would you take Gerrard back?” A surprised Celtic legend Chris Sutton simply responded, “What?”
Savage continued, “I’m just asking the question. They perform well in Europe on Thursday nights, but domestically, they’ve been miles off.”
Sutton responded: “They have, but people down south don’t understand—finishing second in Scotland means absolutely nothing. Celtic and Rangers are two massive clubs. I think Rangers have won just three trophies in 12 years, and that’s simply unacceptable.”
People talk about Celtic having more financial resources, but when you lose at home to Queen’s Park a mid-table Championship team that’s a really bad look. The pressure must be well and truly on him.”
